To the horizon
I know it's been awhile. Two weeks ago, I was all prepared to regale you with tales about boring holiday break in the usual bitchy tone you've come to love. Then my computer froze up. So now I will attempt to recreate that account of my holiday break, even though it has long ceased being relevant.
My Christmas and New Year were nice enough. Smiles were smiled, hugs were given, and gifts were exchanged with family and friends. But ultimately things were kind of blah. No memorable moments, nothing to be reflected on years down the line, and no hilarious mishaps. Things were decidedly tame, which is nice in a way, but feels empty nonetheless. What is more interesting than what I did is what I didn't do, which I share below:
1. I didn't go anywhere interesting. It's about time I did. I haven't taken a trip a long, long time to any place to relax and unwind. Instead I've been bouncing around the same five or six places every week, running into same old people, doing the same old things. It's time for a change of scenery. This nerd likes his interior, climate-controlled environments, but even he grows weary of them sometimes. A trip to a major city with some good sightseeing would do the trick. Maybe DC for its many historical landmarks or Colonial Williamsburg for... well forget that one. Or I could just go down to Florida, hit the beach, and absorb all the eye candy.
2. I didn't make any New Year's resolutions. New Year's resolutions, while a good tool for self-reflection, ultimately fail when it comes to actual results. If you were really needed to change something in your life, why would you wait until some arbitrary date (on which you're likely to be drunkest you been all year) to get your ass in gear?
3. I didn't finish that term paper. As much as I want to be done with last semester, I can't finish this paper I received an extension on. The motivation just isn't there. Plus the thing is really, really long. It has to be fifteen pages, single-spaced, in 10 point font. What did I do in a previous life to deserve this? Even now, I just spent an hour and a half trying to find a digital copy of a reference that would help me out a lot. No luck. And the little hints of motivation just died.
4. I haven't finished Final Fantasy Tactics. I love this game's battle system, but I have no idea what the hell is going on. I played it a few hours last week and was lost. "Why'd they kill that guy? Who was that guy? Oh I remember him, but what does he have to do with this?" Even a FAQ about the story proves itself to be intimidating.
Well there you have it. I think the sparks of bitchiness have been preserved. The only other noteworthy thing to share is that I've played (and completed) Wario Ware: Smooth Moves for the Wii. I've always loved the Wario Ware games and their mostly-portable presence was regrettable IMO. However, after having played and beaten the newest edition in about six hours, the value of the experience doesn't seem to justify the $50 price tag, compared to the $35 for the handheld games.
Anyhoo, this is all I have right now. My left contact is about drive me up a wall, so I must go.
